Explorations of Culturally Responsive STEM Pedagogies
The Scholars Integrating Science Tech Engineering Math in Elementary Classrooms (SISTEMEC) Noyce project works to prepare future STEM elementary teachers with a strength-based perspective of their future pupils from high-needs districts and their communities. In order to do this, we explore culturally responsive and sustaining pedagogies that consider underrepresented students’ cultural, linguistic, and ethnic practices as assets over barriers to the learning process. These explorations were coupled with mentorships with Master STEM Teachers in communities considered high needs. Scholars report feeling more confident and better prepared to meet future challenges.
