The Milwaukee Master Teacher Partnership
The Milwaukee Master Teacher Partnership (MMTP) is a five-year NSF Noyce Master Teacher Fellowship project between the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and high school mathematics and science teachers in Milwaukee Public Schools. The project provides opportunities for these master teachers to engage in diverse action research projects related to math and science content and pedagogy through the earning of microcredentials. Each project year, teachers identify areas of study related to their teaching, read and discuss related research, implement new pedagogical or curricular strategies, design and implement an associated action research project to study the effects, and then share results with their peers. The project simultaneously develops teacher leadership capacity, empowering them to design and implement professional development projects for peers in their department, school, or district related to their microcredential areas of study, and then study the cumulative changes in teacher and student learning.. Thus, the UW-Milwaukee and MPS partnership project develops teachers’ content knowledge for teaching, improves the pedagogical practices that influence student learning, and develops teams of teacher leaders who design and conduct action research projects leading to iterative cycles of professional development across the district.
