Bio

Amy Sandy has taught for Springdale Public Schools for 12 years. She currently teaches all subjects of third grade at Sonora Elementary School, where she has been for seven years. Amy strives to build a classroom where any student can do mathematics. She fosters a growth mindset in her diverse students, no matter their past experiences inside or outside of school, which enables them to take risks, try new ideas and strategies, and explain their thinking to others. She encourages deep conceptual thinking through her number choices, sequences of problem types, and comparisons of student strategies. Amy has been awarded PTA Teacher of the Year from Lee Elementary, and Arkansas Elementary Math Teacher of the Year from the Mathematical Association of America. She was the recipient of two grants bringing LEGOs into her curriculum and grade level. Amy has served on district and regional math leadership teams which involved modeling lessons, providing professional development, and collaborating with regional educators to create curricular progression documents. Amy has presented at numerous conferences including the National Cognitively Guided Instruction Convention. Amy earned a B.S. in education and a M.A. in teaching from the University of Arkansas. She achieved National Board Certification in 2011. She is certified in elementary education and English as a second language.
