My name is Lisa Nielsen. I teach 4th grade at Tanque Verde Elementary School in Arizona. I have been a teacher for 13 years. I have taught 2nd grade ELL as well. I have always been a champion of teaching science in elementary school. It began when I was told I wasn't allowed to teach science to ELL students. I found inventive ways to integrate science in other subjects and I noticed the impact science could have on student achievement. I worked with other teachers there and created a school science fair. At my present school I am the Science Fair Coordinator and I sit on the district STEM committee. I was selected as a STEMAZing Teacher Leader in 2018. I began facilitating workshops for teachers around the county. I was honored to present a workshop at the 2019 Arizona Science Teacher's Association conference. I am very passionate about teaching science to elementary age children. It has become common practice for teachers to skip over science entirely and only offer integration through a few texts. I joined a task force for Professional Development and Teacher Buy-in. I continue to seek out new opportunities to collaborate with other science teachers and share best science and engineering practices with others.
