Jim Brown has an MST in Elementary Education and a BS in Industrial Distribution. He has numerous N – 12 teaching and energy industry certifications. The most notable teaching awards are the NSTA Distinguished Science Teaching Award and the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. Jim began teaching in 1993 and currently teaches renewable energy to 5th grade and robotics and programming to 6th at Sand Creek Middle School. He mentors KidWind and FIRST LEGO League teams and had a team compete at the National KidWind event in 2018.
Jim has facilitated workshops through graduate level courses in both educational and business settings, and has helped develop and judge national and international STEM competition and grant programs. For the last two years he has been a judge at the national KidWind Competition. Recently, he worked as a curriculum content advisor on the reboot of the Magic School Bus series with Netflix, 9Story, and Scholastic. Jim is a trainer for the Energizing Student Potential program in Chicago and Washington, D.C, which is a multi-year Energy and STEM effort for schools sponsored by the Exelon Foundation, ComEd, Pepco, Nicor Gas, Peoples Gas, North Shore Gas and BP. He supports educational energy audits and teacher professional development activities for the program. Currently Jim is a member of the NSTA/NCTM STEM Ambassador program.
