Decision Education Fellowship

Seeking middle and high school teachers interested in being a Decision Education Fellow. Selected teachers will work collaboratively to create critical thinking and decision-making lessons that can be incorporated into core subjects. These lesson “overlays” will teach students to apply critical thinking and decision making skills to solve real-world problems within standard-aligned lessons. Specifically, students will learn to be aware of and avoid cognitive biases, think probabilistically, and evaluate information to update beliefs. Fellows will have a unique opportunity to have a significant social impact by empowering students to be better decision-makers.

Fellows should have a valid teaching license and at least 3 years of experience teaching ELA, Math, Science, or Social Studies to middle or high school students. Deep knowledge of Common Core State Standards (ELA and/or Math) and/or Next Generation Science Standards and/or the C3 Social Studies Framework is required. Fellows must understand the classroom environments and be able to design educational materials and exercises that are relevant and compelling to students. It is desired, but not required, that fellows have the ability to test what they develop in their classrooms. It is also desired, but not required, that Fellows are located in PA, OH, NY, NJ, CT, or DE.

Essential role functions include:

  • Learn about critical thinking and decision making concepts per provided resources
  • Review provided materials, including curricular exemplars
  • Research other related curriculum examples and share them with co-fellows
  • Map state standards to critical thinking and decision making concepts
  • Co-generate criteria and constraints for the lesson overlays
  • Draft and revise lesson overlays based on feedback from co-fellows and supervisor
  • Develop expertise in decision skills

Each week, we anticipate a 90-minute meeting and approximately 90-minutes of independent research, learning, and drafting of lesson overlays. All meetings will be virtual. The project will start at the end of June and continue until the end of the 2020-2021 school year. Fellows will receive direction and support from the Director of Education, Dr. David Kanter. Thanks to a gift from our sponsors, fellows who partake in the project will receive a $3,000 stipend.

For more information, please contact Dr. David Kanter at dkanter@AllianceForDecisionEducation.org. To apply, please send your resume and statement of purpose that is approximately 250 words to madeline@AllianceForDecisionEducation.org by Sunday, May 24, 2020.
