Science Across the Elementary Grades and Why It’s so Important

This month's theme, moderated by Abigail Jurist Levy, will explore how how often elementary science is over-looked for math and reading, and the potential impact on equity of instruction. Potential strategies to improve instruction, including the integration of science with ELA and mathematics will be examined. Theme Videos

A series of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) modules were created to promote higher-level thinking and spatial skills. Students collaboratively work with partners and use GIS to solve complex, map-based problems.
The focus of the video is to document how our current NSF DR K12 project is designed to advance STEM education by providing ‘all’ students (grades 1-2) with a quality, interdisciplinary science and literacy program and demonstrating empirically student achievement outcomes on norm-referenced tests in science and reading comprehension.
Our project seeks to understand what kinds of supports are needed to help science teachers act as leaders in their buildings in order to promote sustainable science instruction aligned with NGSS, in the context of a large urban district.
Through Making Sense of Science and Literacy, an Investing in Innovation (i3) project, we have worked to address the needs of teachers on all fronts. This video provides a a glimpse into our process and some of the educators we've supported on their journey to NGSS implementation. 
This video shows how one of our grade 3 modules, “Populations and Habitat,” gives students opportunities to understand and explore key ideas of CT such as modeling (both physical and digital) and data analysis while exploring concepts of life science.
This video summarizes some of the citizen science research projects from the iEvolve STEM MSP project in which students are participating.
