Dr. Carolyn Nichol is the Director of the Rice Office of STEM Engagement (R-STEM), the Education Director for the NSF NanoEnabled Water Treatment (NEWT) Center, and Assistant Research Professor in Chemistry. Dr. Nichol’s research interests are in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education and policy. She received her B.S. in chemical engineering from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, her doctorate in chemical engineering from the University of Texas (UT) at Austin, and served as a postdoctoral fellow in the College of Pharmacy at UT Austin.

Dr. Nichol and her team develop, support and promote innovative learning experiences to improve K-12 Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education with the goal that all students have a high quality education that empowers them to become the STEM leaders of tomorrow. The mission of the Rice Office of STEM Engagement is to build STEM knowledge, skills, and leadership by providing innovative high quality pre-K through career STEM learning experiences and enhancing the broader impacts of Rice University’s research. As the Education Director for the NSF NEWT Center, she is also working with faculty, graduate and undergraduate students, and K-12 teachers at Rice, Yale, UT El Paso, and Arizona State University to develop STEM graduates who are creative and innovative leaders in a globally connected economy.
