What's your level of Agricultural Literacy? Did you know that you can't pop corn on the cob to make popcorn? Popcorn is a different plant from the sweet corn we eat on the cob. Students can partner with the Danforth Center to grow different genetic variants of corn and measure corn leaf angle to pick variants that can be grown closer together to get more corn plants per acre. https://www.danforthcenter.org/our-work/education-outreach/k-12-programs/

Great progression
Christine, you have developed an amazing STEM pipeline. How do you fund the components of this? Are all K-8 students invited to participate in Camp Invention?
As an educator in Tennessee, agriculture is still an important component of our economy. I appreciate the connection between farming and STEM. Thanks for all the wonderful ideas and resources!

Hi Christine, This is a packed full video that covers student agency, science fairs, camp invention, summer at costa rica and two programs for teachers. I would have loved watching a three minute video about any one of these to learn more. Seems like the two faculty opportunities "Nourish the Future" and "On the Farm" are particularly interesting to those who watch the video. Maybe provide links for those visiting to learn more? This is an outstanding video with a plethora of science ideas. I grew up in Montana and around wheat, cattle, sheep and horses. I thought I was agricultural literate but your project makes me think I have a lot to learn. Thank you for sharing this. I really enjoyed it.

Interesting Idea
I love the idea of creating a pipeline to support STEAM Education. I loved the involvement of various scientists and the idea of communicating the ideas to others. I do have a question, what is the draw back of the project?

Drawback?
Thanks Yegeny. I have built a bunch of different opportunities for students so that they are more likely to take my research course when they hit high school because they have experience learning with me already. I hope by increasing teacher exposure as well we can reach more students and increase their STEM literacy. We always need funding lol which is definitely a drawback.

K-12 STEM
I enjoyed hearing more about all of the opportunities that these programs offer K-12 students to provide the support they need to persist in STEM.
While I was intrigued by all these amazing programs, and that you are obviously a fantastic teacher leader for making them happen, I was hoping to hear a bit more about other teachers that work with you or how you empower teachers to do the work within all of the programs you mentioned.

Thank you Christine for sharing and for getting different age groups involved in a STEM pipeline. I was just explaining to someone the other day that my place to make a difference in this world is through opening STEM doors for people. You are doing that for sure. I especially like the fact that kids are learning about the natural world around them through your leadership. Continued success!

Leadership Interns & Lead Students
John - I am glad you bring this up. It is hard to fit everything we do into a 3-minute video. Each summer 25-30 high school students volunteer for 40 hrs of community service as Leadership Interns for Camp Invention. They lead up to 5 groups of 20-25 students through a week of STEM learning acting as mentors and role models for the elementary students, sharing their love of STEM exploration and learning. For my middle school biotech camps, I always have Lead Students who have previous knowledge of using the biotech equipment who help to team teach and prep the camps. For the high school camps, I have previous students assist with the week of camp. You are so right that it is important to introduce the students to doing STEM outreach themselves and being science teachers for the younger students or even their peers.

Pipelines or Pipe Organ?
So much happening and it seems like this is more than one conduit to build STEM knowledge, passion and pathway. Pipe organ may not be the right analogy but an attempt to think about the diversity of activities that can lead to a wide variety of possibly pathways.. I really appreciate the larger vision of the agricultural STEM pipeline. Are you involved in all these projects? Or is this part of a larger NJ vision around STEM pipeline? Partners in your area
Gloria, you can do Camp Invention where you are. It is a national Camp. Look into it. They provide all the curriculum and supplies. Look into Education Projects https://educationprojects.org/ They are in Ohio and have great PD and resources. There is a lot of Agriculture in OH and they will partner with teachers. Look into your Ohio Farm Bureau.
Outdoor STEM
Hi Christine,
I love the Camp Invention-- my school is wanting to do a STEAM Camp next summer, and I am very interested in taking it outside. We are near the coast and mountains-- lots of possibilities! I would like to tie in engineering in nature: spider webs, beaver dams, birds' nests, etc. The corn example reminds me of this.

A conduit of STEM talent in the pipeline - love it. Great video with so many innovative approaches to making the STEM "pieces" fit. Making sure the investment in the young students with the summer camp is well done. Lastly, the training of future teachers is a great return on the investment - does your district have college of education partners to bring in pre-service candidates?
